If you listen to NPR, read the paper or watch the news, you may hear talk on economics such as, “New home sales are down 3% from last quarter”, “New car sales are down 10% from last year” with a doom and gloom tone from the deliverer. In the past I have quietly listened and then gone about my day, but recently I’m starting to talk back to my car radio.
“Is that such a bad thing?”
“Who cares?”
“How many more homes can one country build? I didn’t realize that many people lived in the US.”
“Of course US new car sales are down. Our cars blow.”
I never get a response, but it makes me think about things, like why do we always have to be growing economically as a country? Its not normal in life to always be going up. Why are these two things so influential in our economic well being? Maybe people aren’t purchasing new cars because they can’t afford them, or that cars are lasting longer and we don’t need new cars. People aren’t buying new homes because they are too many in the market.
I’m tired of the fear tactics the media uses. We can’t always be growing – it just doesn’t make sense. We should stop worrying about growth and focus on managing what already exists.
I could be wrong in all of this thinking. I did receive a C- in International Finance and Economics, but that was mostly because it was at 7:30am my senior year of college. What are your thoughts on all this crap?

The wife and I got around to seeing the movie Once this weekend. A.O. Scott of the NY Times said it was ‘Close to perfect’. I would have to agree. I will be purchasing said movie and sountrack very soon. Check out their MySpace page for some movie tracks. The movie couldn’t have come at a better time in my life.
